Sunday
1 March. Very crowded today. I'm glad we were here before the weekend and
Tuesday! We have a long wait for lunch,
then all take a gondola ride. Thomas is
terrified, but the gondolier (who couldn't speak any English) began to sing,
"I love spaghetti, I live macaroni . . .." Soon we are all laughing and everything is
all right. We leave for the train
station at 5:45. People are going like
waves to the smoky station.

Monday
2 March. We leave Venice at 8:08 p.m.
Sunday night. We have nicer quarters
this time: two threes instead of one six, complete with chamber pot, sheets and
blankets. I don't sleep as well,
however; it is a very rocky ride. We
arrive in Paris at 8:30 Monday morning and proceed by limo to Gare du Nord
where we leave our bags. We want to take
a Seine boat ride, but we don't have time.
Instead we walk back via the Rue de Rivoli, do some window shopping, buy
Thomas his Eiffel Tower. We leave Paris
at one o'clock, and make the five o'clock ferry to Dover. We eat dinner in the restaurant at the front
of the ship, watching the sun on the water, white caps and occasional
spray. The children eat fast food and
stay in the play area. We have a long wait
time in immigration before the 6:40 train to London Victoria, two taxis to
Liverpool Street Station and the nine o'clock Stanstead Express. The children finally crash, Thomas on top of
his muffin. We arrive home at 10:30. We left in winter, return in spring!
